The pub with the best story wins the AI answer, not the best pub
A head-to-head measurement of rival venues found the same three ingredients behind every AI recommendation, and none of them was the beer.
Same measurement, same set of rival pubs, a different question: not who gets found, but who gets recommended.
Every pub that won a recommendation in our sweep held the same three things. A sentence a journalist or a reviewer had actually written and published somewhere else, not on the pub’s own site. A countable fact the AI could repeat with confidence, a number, not an adjective. And enough reviews that the number behind the recommendation looked solid rather than thin.
Every pub that lost was missing at least one of the three, usually the first. Good beer, honestly kept, a genuinely interesting building, none of it mattered if nobody outside the pub had ever written it down.
Vague strengths don’t survive translation
“A great range of ales” is true and useless to a machine. “Eight cask ales, rotating weekly” is a sentence an AI system can lift whole and hand to a customer as advice. The winners in our sweep had done this translation, on purpose or by accident. The losers had the same strength, described so softly it never made it into an answer.
Your own website is a source, whether you meant it to be or not
One losing pub’s website said, in its own words, that its Sunday roast was “the stuff of local legend.” The AI repeated that line back to customers as a reason to visit. Not because the pub was famous for it externally, because the pub said so about itself and nobody had written anything to contradict it. Where you write the sentence, and nobody else has, you often win by default.
What leaders should do next
- Find the one sentence about your pub a journalist would actually retell, and get it published somewhere other than your own site.
- Turn your vaguest strength into a countable one. A number a machine can repeat beats an adjective every time.
- Chase real reviews before chasing rankings. Every winner in our comparison simply had more of them than the pub it beat.
- Read your own website as if a machine will quote it verbatim to a customer, because increasingly, it will.
